The True Believer as a Political Figure In The Context of Eric Hoffer’s The True Believer

Abstract

In this study, we approach the “true believer” in Eric Hoffer’s The True Believer not as a psychological pathology or a historical anomaly, but as a political figure situated at the core of modern politics. We examine the relationship between the self’s devaluation of itself, the experience of life as an irreparable failure, and the resulting impulse to escape from oneself by turning toward the mass. We show how the self’s inability to generate its own value leads, through processes of identification, belonging, and anonymity, to its dissolution within a cause and a mass movement, thereby forming a political figure. We read the true believer as a subject who perceives freedom as a burden, equality as a threat, and plurality as an intolerable form of uncertainty, and who consequently inverts the foundational concepts of modern political discourse into forms of obedience, homogeneity, and hatred. The article argues that this figure is not limited to totalitarian mass movements, but reappears in different contexts of modern political life as a persistent political figure.
